Summer Skincare Essentials

Summer’s here, bringing with it longer days, warmer nights, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. But that sunshine, while it feels good on our skin, can also be damaging. Sun exposure is a leading cause of premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancer. Dehydration and clogged pores can wreak havoc on our complexions. The good news? With a few summer skincare essentials and a simple summer skincare routine, you can keep your skin healthy, hydrated, and glowing all season long.

Sun Protection: Your First Line of Defense

Sun protection is the cornerstone of any summer skincare routine. The sun emits UVA and UVB rays, both of which can damage the skin. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, contributing to wrinkles and premature aging. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and can also increase your risk of skin cancer.

Here’s what you need to know about sun protection:

  • Use a Mineral sunscreen: These sunscreens contain physical blockers, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays. They are also a good option for people with sensitive skin.
  • Sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is essential. Apply sunscreen generously and evenly to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before going outdoors.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming.
  • Don’t forget areas like your lips, ears, neck, and the tops of your feet.
  • Seek shade during the peak sun hours of 10 am to 4 pm.
  • Consider sun-protective clothing, such as hats and long sleeves, for additional coverage.

I have 2  favorite sunscreen products for the summer:

For an every day, “no makeup” makeup look, DermResults Soft Focus Veil SPF 30 is my favorite. This all-in-one breathable, tinted skincare and 100% mineral-based sun protection product makes it easier than ever to achieve a soft-focus effect and radiant finish with silky smooth SPF 30 protection. This sheer, buildable veil helps blur skin to diminish the appearance of pores and baby lines. And thanks to the natural-looking skin tint, it complements a wide range of skin tones so you’re left with a radiant “no makeup” look and a healthy-looking glow.

For days spent outside and at the pool or beach, I always reach for FunSun® Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30+. This is a great option for everyday wear or for reapplying throughout the day. It’s formulated with the latest technological advancement of Zinc Oxide to help prevent against UVA (the sun’s skin aging rays) and UVB (the sun’s burning rays), so you can enjoy your time under the sun (or underwater!). Plus, it doesn’t include chemical UV filters. Apply this moisturizing formula to leave skin looking dewy with a hint of iridescence — and without the chalky white cast!

Hydration is Key: Keeping Your Skin Plump and Glowing

Summer heat can leave your skin feeling parched. Dehydration shows up as dullness, flakiness, and even wrinkles. The DermResults Advanced line is hyaluronic acid based, which helps to build the skin’s moisture reserve and fortify the skin’s moisture barrier while targeting visible signs of aging including lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity, firmness, texture, and moisture loss.

It’s also important to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and incorporate hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, and leafy greens into your diet.

Gentle Cleansing: Removing Sweat, Sunscreen, and Impurities

Sweating is a natural way for our bodies to cool down, but it can also clog pores and lead to breakouts. Cleanse your face gently morning and night to remove sweat, sunscreen, dirt, and oil buildup. Look for a cleanser formulated for your specific skin type.

Exfoliation: Promoting Cell Turnover for a Brighter You

Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, revealing the brighter, smoother skin beneath. However, be gentle – over-exfoliation can irritate your skin. Aim to exfoliate 1-2 times a week, depending on your skin type.

Maintaining a Glowing Complexion: Additional Tips

  • Exfoliation: Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, revealing the brighter, smoother skin beneath.
  • Look for antioxidant-rich products: Antioxidants like vitamin C and E help fight free radical damage caused by the sun and pollution.
  • After-sun care: After a day in the sun, soothe your skin with a hydrating after-sun lotion or aloe vera gel.
  • Minimize makeup wear: Opt for a more natural look in the summer. Heavy makeup can clog pores and irritate the skin.
  • Relax and unwind: Stress can take a toll on your skin. Make time for relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

By following these tips you can create a summer skincare regimen that protects your skin from sun damage, keeps it hydrated, and maintains a healthy, radiant glow throughout the season. With a little effort, you can keep your summer skin looking its best so you can focus on soaking up all the fun that the season has to offer.
