Boosting Your Immune System

Flu & virus season usually starts in October, but peaks in December-February. We are now in that peak time of year, so it’s very important to do what we can to stay healthy. Did you know that by boosting your immune system, you can help prevent catching a cold or flu, and decrease time feeling ill? Incorporating a few key vitamins into your diet and supplements may help you avoid winter viruses and enjoy a healthy season!

Vitamin C is one of the biggest immune system boosters of all. In fact, a lack of vitamin C can even make you more prone to getting sick. Foods rich in vitamin C include oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, strawberries, bell peppers, spinach, kale and broccoli. Vitamin C contributes to your immune defense system by supporting multiple cellular functions of your body’s adaptive immune systems. Being an antioxidant, it can also fight free radicals in the body, which decreases inflammation and boosts immunity.

Vitamin B Complex consists of eight different vitamins, which are essential for maintaining good health and well-being. The B vitamins are: thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folic acid or folate (B9) and cobalamin (B12). Vitamin B Complex can help strengthen your immune system, prevent or reduce your risk of infections, improve energy levels, good for digestion, support the growth of red blood cells and promote proper nerve and healthy brain function.

Zinc is essential for our immune system, as it affects how our cells respond to infections, and can help keep inflammation under control. There are a number of ways zinc supports the immune system but primarily it activates enzymes that break down proteins in viruses and bacteria so they are less able to spread. Zinc also increases the activation of cells responsible for fighting infection. Our bodies cannot make zinc so it needs to come from our food. You can find it in beans, shellfish, whole grains and dairy. Taking a Zinc supplement is beneficial as well.

Selenium plays an important role in the health of your immune system. This antioxidant helps lower oxidative stress in your body, which reduces inflammation and enhances immunity. Studies have demonstrated that increased blood levels of selenium are associated with enhanced immune response.

I like to keep these SuperBoost Antioxidant Shots on hand because this juice-based vegan dietary supplement “shot” delivers a cornucopia of antioxidants. Not only does it have Vitamin C, Zinc and Selenium, it’s packed with superfruits like Blueberry, Pomegranate, Amla and Açai as well. It also features an Energy Booster blend with naturally-derived caffeine from Green Tea Leaf and Guarana Seed along with botanicals Yerba Mate Leaf and Ginseng Root Extracts to deliver a gentle boost of energy. It’s nice to get that little extra boost of energy if you’re starting to feel a bit run down!
